Summary
Twenty-four patients with chronic venous insufficiency and lower leg ulceration were treated with either: biocellulose wound dressing (BWD) plus a 2-layer compression bandage or, standard care. Standard care consisted of a non-adherent primary wound dressing plus a 2-layer compression bandage. Evaluations were performed weekly to measure wound pain, nonviable tissue reduction, degree of wound granulation, and wound healing (reduction in wound size and surface area). BWD was significantly more effective than standard care for autolytic debridement (reduction in the amount of nonviable tissue {p = 0.0094}). The mean number of days to >75% granulation was 43 days for the BWD treated group and 71 for the standard care group. Mean percent reduction in wound area was also greater for the BWD treated group at week 6 (39% vs. 19%) and at week 12 (74% vs. 49%). When compared to patients treated with standard care, the group treated with BWD reported less wound pain at each evaluation point.

Title
Development and implementation of a clinical pathway to improve venous leg ulcer treatment.
Citation
Wounds (2009) 21 (5): 127 - 133
Type of study
  • Clinical trial
Main test products L&R
Rosidal sys, Suprasorb A, Suprasorb P, Suprasorb C
Key points
Clinical pathway, venous leg ulcers, implementation, treatment outcomes
Summary
After implementation of the clinical pathway (SG) for venous leg ulcer treatment a statistically significant (p less than 0,005) shorter period for ulcer closure was demonstrated for the patients treated with Rosidal sys and one of the Suprasorb range dressings, when compared to previous treatment given at the center. Further an improvement of quality of life was noted for the SG (p less than 0,05 for the combined parameters and p less than 0,005 for pain), as well as significant cost savings (p less than 0,05).

Title
Monitoring the microcirculation to evaluate dressing performance in patients with venous leg ulcers.
Citation
Journal of Wound Care (2009) 18 (4): 145 - 150.
Type of study
  • Clinical trial
Main test products L&R
Rosidal K, Suprasorb P, Suprasorb C
Key points
Perfusion; oxygenation; progression to healing; venous leg ulcers
Summary
This study suggests that a moist wound environment stimulates perfusion of blood and oxygen to the wound tissue, thereby promoting angiogenesis. The collagen and foam dressing combination demonstrated superior results to the control and foam dressing only. Monitoring the microcirculation may help to assess the effect of dressings on venous leg ulcer healing.

Title
Expériences avec un pansement Hydrobalance dans le traitement des plaies.
Citation
Poster. Conférence des Plaies et Cicatrisations (CPC), Paris 18 - 20 Jan. 2009.
Type of study
  • Case series reports
Main test products L&R
Suprasorb X, Suprasorb X + PHMB
Key points
HydroBalance dressing; infection; inflammation; pain reduction
Summary
This series of case studies looked at wounds of different aetiologies. The results of the 50 cases evaluated showed that over the 4 weeks treatment period with Suprasorb X (and PHMB) epithelialisation was stimulated and inflammation was reduced. Further patients reported a reduction in pain. Dressing changes took place on average every three days.
