Finally! On Thursday April 15, L&R Austria held its second L&R Wound Day. This was an event for medical and nursing staff aiming to share new perspectives in the fields of wound care, NPWT and compression.
Due to the current COVID-19 situation, the 2nd L&R Wound Day took place as an online event -a great success nonetheless! And there is a a silver lining: Due to the digital format, not only interested participants from Austria were reached, but an international audience from Switzerland and Germany participated.
At 2:00 p.m. Gerald Gschlössl, L&R Head of Marketing & Sales Austria, opened the event and warmly welcomed the approximately 300 online participants and the six keynote speakers from a TV studio in the city centre of Vienna.
As in 2019, national and international speakers from business and practice shared state-of-art knowledge expertise and practical experience. After each presentation, the audience had the opportunity to join a a live chat and asked questions, which were immediately answered by the respective speaker.
The opening lecture was given by Prim. Univ. Prof. Dr. Matthias Rab, head of the Department of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery at KABEG Klinikum Klagenfurt. In his life coverage he shared his experiences with Negative Pressure Wound Therapy (NPWT). He impressively explained which factors have to be considered when it comes to problematic wounds and treatment with negative pressure therapy and deep drainage (Suprasorb® CNP P3).
With the title "Am seidenen Faden - Spinnenseide in der Medizin" (On a silken tether - spider silk in medicine), Dr. Sarah Strauss, head of the Spider Silk Laboratory at the Hannover Medical School, briefed the audience about the extraction and medical applications of spider silk in a live presentation. Many listeners gave high attention to this forward looking topic.
Afterwards, Univ.-Prof. Dr. Lars Kamolz MSC was welcomed live in the studio. The Vice-President of the Austrian Society for Plastic Surgery and Head of the Clinical Department for Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery in Graz introduced a new approaches in the treatment of burns. Once again, it was clearly emphasised that modern wound management is key in the treatment of such injuries.
PD Dr. Cornelia Wiegand, Research Associate in the routine- and in-vitro research laboratory of the Department of Dermatology at the University Hospital Jena, Germany, presented her investigations and studies on antimicrobial efficacy - silver vs. PHMB. The questions of why and when to treat with antimicrobial substances and which one to chose were comprehensively answered during her presentation.
After the break, OÄ Dr. Rupa Rahmen took the hot seat in the live studio. Her lecture dealt with applications for medical adaptive compression systems. She enthusiastically shared her experience, gained from her work as a specialist in physical and general rehabilitation at the Rheumatism Centre Vienna Oberlaa, with the audience.
The panel of specialists completed Assoc.-Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Chieh-H John Tzou MBA, head of the Outpatient Clinic for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the Department of Surgery in Krankenhaus Göttlicher Heiland, Vienna. He also travelled straight to the TV studio and gave a remarkable lecture on the surgical treatments of lymphoedema. This talk was supported by case studies in his day-to-day operations.
After more than three hours filled with impressive scientific lectures, new insights and lively exchange of experiences, this keynote concluded the very successful Online L&R Wound Day 2021.
