October 13 is World Thrombosis Day!

Thrombosis is a word that most of you have heard, perhaps in relation to hospitalization, long flights or long hours sitting. But do you actually know what thrombosis is and why it is so important to prevent it?

Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot (called “thrombus”) within a blood vessel. Once formed, it can slow down or block the normal blood flow, and it can even break loose and travel to vital organs like the lungs, brain or heart (called “embolism”).

According to the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis, thrombosis is often the underlying, yet preventable, cause of heart attack, thromboembolic stroke and venous thromboembolism - the top three cardiovascular killers.

Besides many other risk factors, immobility plays a significant role. Sitting long hours on your desk or in a cramped position during long journeys slows blood flow in the legs which can contribute to the formation of clots.

What you can do:
